This course aims to bring together the unique strengths of engineering and industrial design in the context of sustainable design. Designers will address product and system design from a holistic perspective, integrating ecological, economic, and social considerations. Special emphasis is given to the usage context in sustainability and the interface between products and people. The course will survey topics and tools in sustainable design, such as life cycle analysis, energy rebound effects and normative social influence. Exploration of topics will include design, modeling, analysis, readings, discussion, and writing. Students will design human-centered sustainable products or systems as part of multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary teams.
