Transportation Design Lab

Driving Simulator and Interior Design for transportation concepts, sponsored by GM. This driving simulator (a 2010 Chevy Malibu interior) can be used to test new controls and machine interfaces, with components being able to be swapped quickly. Supplemented with reconfigurable driving software, and eye tracking cameras (to measure human response), this design lab works with the engineering, and human factors/psychology disciplines to advance ideas in the controls of vehicles.

Design Shop

Located in the basement of the College of Design East building, students can use the facilities to prototype models and refine designs. There is an exterior space which is available to use 24/7 by students with proper buzzcard access, and an interior space which requires supervision and prior training. 

Paint Booth - Design Shop

The College of Architecture has a fully ventilated paint booth for students to access. It is located outside of the fabrication studio, located in the East building, basement level. 

Invention Studio

Founded in late 2009, the Invention Studio is a student-run maker space open to all of Georgia Tech. It is staffed by the Prototyping Instructors, student volunteers who are on hand to train you and help with your projects. Use of the studio is free for all students, faculty and staff of Georgia Tech, regardless of year, major, or prior experience.

Trak Two-Axis CNC Mill ("Trak Mill")

This computer numerically controled (CNC) mill is programmable in the XY-plane on the attached digital interface. Files can be uploaded via a USB. With this mill, users can position the drill, mill lines (in any direction), mill arcs, cut out circles, and make profiles and pockets. All plastics and metals can be milled, however, steel requires the machine to be put into a lower gear. Note that the Z-plane control is manual and that wood is not allowed on the machine. This machine is located in the BME Shop in the Whitaker Biomedical Engineering Building.

Electrolounge at the Georgia Tech Invention Studio

The Electrolounge is fully stocked with a Circuit Mill, Oscilloscope, Soldering tools, Logic Analyzer, LCR Meter, Circuit Diagnostic Tools, IR Thermometer, and Embroidery/Sewing Machine. All of these resources can be used with the help or independently of ULI's.  

Wood Room at the Georgia Tech Inventio Studio

The wood room houses the following tools that can be used independently or with the help of ULI's. THe tools located in the Wood Room are: a CNC Router, Miter Saw, Bandsaw, Scroll Saw, Wood Lathe, Drill Press, Handheld Power Tools, Cutting Tools, Sanders, Table Saws, Router and Router Table, and Planer.  

Waterjet Room at the Georgia Tech Invention Studio

The Waterjet room is located in the MRDC. Don't be fold by the name. This room also stores, three laser cutters, a water jet, and a plethora of other hand tools. Pro tip - if you have a job that needs to get done, arrive when doors open. Lines build up very quickly.

Fablicator 3-D Printer

Upload stereolithography (STL) file via USB or SD card onto the on-board computer. Use KISSlicer software package that is loaded onto the attached computer. Save the file as G code in the computer, load this into the 3-D printer, and set the extruder and bed temperatures. 3-D printing materials are supplied by the BME Shop. Maximum print size is 8 inches by 8 inches. This machine is located in the BME Shop in the Whitaker Biomedical Engineering Building.

Metal Shop at the Invention Studio

Metal Shop at the Invention Studio is located in the MRDC. The tools in the Metal Shop include: a Bandsaw, Drill Press, Sheet Metal Brake, Tube Bender, Grinders, Vacuum Former, and Kiln. 

Lulzbot TAZ 3-D Printer

This tool has multiple extruders available that can be interchanged by staff members to print traditional materials as well as Ninjaflex, which can be used to print softer and more flexible parts. Prints can be up to 12" by 12". Load the printing file into the green CURA program on the computer to the right of the TAZ 3-D Printer. Printing materials are provided by the BME Shop. This machine is located in the BME Shop in the Whitaker Biomedical Engineering Building.

Machine Shop at the Georgia Tech Invention Studio

Come check out the Machine Shop at the Invention studio to really get some first hand experience in industry level manufacturing. The Machine shop has a whole bunch of equipment like Manual Mills, Manual Lathes, CNC Mills, CNC Lathes, and Injection Molding! 

3D Printing Room at the Georgia Tech Invention Studio

The 3D Printing Room, located in the MRDC, is home to the Studio's vast collection of rapid prototyping machines. However, this room offers much more than just 3D Printing. 3D scanners and Vinyl Cutters can be used by any students and all of these machines come with material (or you can BYOM if you choose). 

Ultimaker 2 3-D Printers

To use the Ultimaker 2s, upload a stereolithography (STL) file into the attached computer into the blue CURA program. Save the file as G code to an SD card to load the file into the Ultimaker 2. Two printers are in the BME Shop and more units are available in the Senior Design Lab, both of which are n the Whitaker Biomedical Engineering Building. Printing materials are supplied for free by the BME Shop. 

 

Band Saw

The band saw can be used to cut plastics, metals, and wood. The speed must be adjusted to go slower when cutting metals. The height of the saw can be adjusted up to 12" to accommodate larger materials. The band saw should not be used to cut cylinders, for safety implications. This machine is located in the BME Shop in the Whitaker Biomedical Engineering Building.

Hand Tapper Assist

The hand tapper assist is a manual tool that is a cutting tool used to create screw threads, or threading. The tap is used to cut the female portion of the mating pair (nut), while a die is used to cut the male portion of the mating pair (bolt). This machine is located in the BME Shop in the Whitaker Biomedical Engineering Building.

Band Saw - Design Shop

The band saw is ideal for cutting wood and thin plastics. It is not meant for metals or other dense materials, there are 3 band saws located inside the main fabrication shop located in the basement level of the architecture east building.  Parts must be large enough so that hands are never within 3" of cutter.  Parts must lay flat on table

Wood Lathe - Design Shop

The wood lathe is a variable speed machine.  Wood and dense foam can be mounted and the part is revolved.  Special tools are used to shape the revolved design.  Training is a MUST.   Use protective eyewear when using the wood lathe.

Spindle Sander - Design Shop

Spindle sander is used to clean up simple curved cuts in wood.  Sanders can only effectively sand small amounts.  Cutting first at bandsaw near the layout line then cleaning up at sanders is correct.

Wood Planer - Design Shop

Planers dimension lumber in thickness.  Boards must be relatively flat to use on a planer.  Wood only.

COA Plotter Room

The plotter is a computer printer for printing vector graphics. The Plotter Room has two HP Designjet 4000s. They will plot on 36" and 42" paper. 

COA Computer Lab

The COA computer lab is situated in the college of Architecture. All computers in the COA Lab run 3D modeling software such as Revit, Fusion 360, Solidworks etc. In addition the computers are also equipped with the Adobe Creative Cloud.

 

  

The Materials Innovation & Learning Laboratory (MILL)

Established in Fall 2016, this make-and-measure space was created to give students the chance to learn more about the practical applications of materials science. Here, students can examine the characteristics and properties of the materials they are working with, by using high tech testing equipment. Students can also experiment with new and different types of materials by using the space's specialized 3d printers.
